What is the difference between ADHD and ADD?

ADD is an older term for the predominantly inattentive type of ADHD. Today, the diagnosis ADHD covers all three presentations: predominantly inattentive (formerly ADD), predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined type. The inattentive type is more often overlooked, particularly in women, because symptoms are less visible than classic hyperactivity.

The assessment process is the same whether you use the term ADD or ADHD. We use DIVA-5, which systematically covers all 18 DSM-5 symptoms across inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, ensuring the correct presentation is identified.

We recommend bringing a relative

For the DIVA-5 interview (step 2), we recommend bringing someone who knew you as a child, such as a parent. It helps us evaluate childhood symptoms, which is an important part of ADHD diagnostics.

If that's not possible, we find alternative ways to gather the information.

Timeline

From first contact to stable treatment typically takes 2 to 3 months. The assessment itself (steps 1-3) usually takes 3 to 4 weeks, as we schedule sessions closely. If ADHD is confirmed, medication can begin within 1 to 2 weeks of diagnosis.

We always look at the full picture. 70 to 80 percent of everyone with ADHD has at least one comorbid condition such as anxiety, depression, or sleep disorders. That is why we start with a comprehensive screening rather than focusing on ADHD alone.

For comparison, the public system wait time for an ADHD assessment is typically 1.5 to 3 years.

All pathways start with a clinical interview. Book online.
