What is ADHD in adults?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition. Symptoms are typically evident during the developmental period (early to mid-childhood), but many adults are only recognised and assessed later in life. ADHD has three presentations: predominantly inattentive (formerly ADD), predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined type. The inattentive type is most often missed, particularly in women, because the symptoms are not outwardly visible. 70–80% of adults with ADHD have at least one comorbid condition such as anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, or trauma, which affects the treatment plan.

What symptoms appear in adults with ADHD?

Typical adult symptoms are persistent concentration difficulties, problems with planning and structure, time blindness, inner restlessness, impulsivity, emotion regulation difficulties, and procrastination. In women and late-diagnosed adults, anxiety, exhaustion, and perfectionism often appear on top of the underlying ADHD symptoms, because many have spent years compensating. Symptoms must originate in the developmental period and affect multiple life domains to meet DSM-5 diagnostic criteria.

How quickly can I be assessed for ADHD?

At ADHD Klinik, wait times for the first clinical interview are typically short. The assessment pathway itself (interview, DIVA-5, feedback) runs with closely scheduled sessions. If ADHD is confirmed, medication can begin with the clinic's psychiatrists as part of the ongoing pathway. You book directly online without a referral.

What does an ADHD diagnosis for adults involve?

An ADHD diagnosis in adults is made after a thorough clinical assessment. The Danish healthcare system uses ICD-10 (transitioning to ICD-11) as the diagnostic classification underlying the diagnosis in the report. At ADHD Klinik, we use DIVA-5 (Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults), the semi-structured diagnostic interview recommended by the Danish Health Authority. DIVA-5 is built on DSM-5 symptom criteria and systematically reviews all 18 symptoms for both current and developmental periods. You receive a written report with diagnosis, clinical evaluation, and an individual treatment plan. The diagnosis forms the basis for access to medical treatment, therapy, and in some cases workplace accommodations.
